The 18th edition of Club Sport’s annual kickball tournament, “Showdown at the Playground” did not disappoint this year! We saw 28 teams descend on Gadsden Park in Tampa on a gorgeous December Saturday. Teams set up camp and enjoyed a great day of competition and friendship. The tailgating was almost as entertaining as the play on the field! On the rec side of the tournament, most of the groups were tight with the advancing teams not decided until the final pool play game. After some intense semi-finals, the final saw “Will Kick For Beer” take a commanding lead. But down by 8 in the bottom of the final inning, “All My Pitches Love Me” staged a rally that falled short with the tying run stuck on first giving “Will Kick For Beer” the rec title. On the competitive side two powerhouses proved why they were favored and met in the finals. In the championship, it took extra innings for “Huge in Japan” to edge out “Eastbound and Down”, adding to their trophy case of multiple titles.

Also thank you to all those who gave for our raffle. We raised $200 for Moffitt Cancer Research in the memory of longtime player Luis Diego Villarejos – which Club Sport matched.

Just as fun was our famous afterparty atElmer’s Sports Cafe. Our kickballers relived the day’s glory and broke out many a flip cup game while polishing off numerous kegs of Miller Lite. Thanks to our other sponsors MOR, Blue Moon, and Southern Comfort. Hope to see everyone for the 19th edition in 2016.

Last Friday Club Sport had a great turnout of 34 players!  The beer and cards were flowing quickly, and play was fast and furious before John Keenan had to take the walk of shame as “first out.” John picked up a great Southern Comfort and Miller Lite prize pack for his time with us (foam finger, backpack, bottle opener, sunglasses and coozie). A couple hours later the field was whittled down to a final table of ten, where all attendees were given Club Sport “Final Table” poker tourney pint glasses and Blue Moon coozies. After a long and fierce battle all night, newcomer James Harazin cashed in for $122 for his 4th place finish.   3rd place went to regular Mike Kijewski who battled back form near extinction and won $200 for his efforts. Heads up came down to long time participants Scott Rutz and Tim Mogelgaard.  Tim had the chip lead most of the final table, but Scott was up 2 to 1 when it got down to heads up.  The tournament was well after midnight at this point, so Tim went all in 3 straight hands and put a quick end to a fun evening.  Scott pocketed $300 for his runner up finish and Tim took home the trophy and $500.  The “second chance” tourney sat 8 players and paid out two spots with Drew Brannon and Joann Suyao agreeing to chop the $340 purse!

The US took on Brazil in Orlando as part of their Victory Tour and Club Sport’s bus trip to the game was a blast! We took 22 fans on the bus and partied on the way up. Ice cold Miller Lite flowed, along with watching a little bit of the early NFL games. The seats for the game were amazing as always as we took over section 137 sideline seating and were able to see our favorite soccer players up close and personal and witness the 3-1 win by the US.

Club Sport had 16 two-person teams attend the Glow Ball Golf Tournament last Saturday night at Lansbrook golf course. The golfers participated in a great pre-round happy hour with free Miller Lite and a buffet with burgers, dogs, wings, nachos and chili before heading out to the course at sunset. Tiki torches lit the tee boxes and 150 yard markers, while hundreds of LED lights and glow sticks framed the hazards and greens. All cart paths were lined with tea candles, providing some amazing scenery! During the round there were Long drive contests won by Aaron Swenson and Sharon Deane who won great Lansbrook and Club Sport prizes, while closest to the pin was won by Matt Baum, who took home a great gift basket from Fore-Seasons indoor golf range! Score cards were turned in and calculated after the round and Roger Sesti and Tim Mogelgaard took home free tickets to the Valspar PGA tournament and Club Sport etched Pint Glasses by shooting 35 (-1), good for second place. First place went to Multiple Fore-gasms who shot an impressive 33 (-3) and walked away with free golf from Lansbrook and Club Sport etched championship pint glasses!

Thanks to everyone for making the 2015 9th Annual Gulf Scream a great tournament for us! Be sure to check out the standings and photos to tag you and your friends!

It was a beautiful day for soccer as a full crew of 16 teams descended upon USF’s Magnolia Field to take part in the 9th Annual Gulf Scream Soccer Tournament. In the end, three champions were crowned: Fruitbaskets (coed competitive division), Eight Tailed Fox (coed recreational), and Los Gringos (men’s open).

There were some great games throughout the day with some high scoring matches. By the end of the day, all teams completed their 3 game pool play matches and the top squads would advance to the finals. Additional congratulations to the runners up teams, who battled hard through the day, but did not bring home the big cup…you fought hard and made it to the top tier for the day: Fireball (coed competitive division), Espino FM (coed recreational), and ManChestHair (men’s open).

Peabody’s hosted the battle tested teams after the tournament, with the Southern Comfort andMiller Lite flowing like water. Those still hungry for competition took part in a few games of darts, foosball, and arcade basketball at the bar. Those that had their fill on the pitch simply relaxed with a few brews and a SoCo & Lime shot, while enjoying the company of their teammates and fellow competitors.
